Hi Everyone,
Phil here, I live in gloucester in the uk and am new to this forum and to the Baleno. Have just purchased a Baleno estate 1.8 glx and have to say i'm very impressed with this car, 115,000 on the clock, full history, engine is very torquey and pulls like a train and am averaging 38 mpg.
any hints on things to look out for would be appreciated
Phil

Welcome to the forum mate. I don't know if it will be the same for the estate but a few baleno's i've seen have the problem of the subframe corroding. Other than that I havent heard of anything else. I'm sure a few of the other guys will know a bit more than me.  Smiley

Welcome along! Main things are the subframes, other than that with the 1.8 make sure you keep the oil close to the maximum as you can damage the j18 if oil is low

Hi Guys,
Thanks for that, the rear frame looks very clean and satin black, so either replaced or just very lucky Smiley, front one has a touch of surface rust but does seem solid, will get it off over the weekend and clean it up and use a few coats of heavy zinc primer and waxoil. Funnily enough first thing i checked was the oil and it was spot on the max mark, have serviced it today myself with mobil 1 esp 5w/30, changed plugs for denso iridiums and also changed gear box fluid. Tommorow will be doing handbrake cable as passenger side is stretched  by process of elimination (disks and pads fine so must be cable as won't adjust up).
Next job after that will be finding a towbar so if anyone has one off the estate please letme know if you want rid of it
Cheers
Phil

5/30? Strange, all the books for the uk 1.8 say 10/40.

The iridiums are what's meant to be in it too, but cos there expensive people don't bother changing them. Have you tried the adjuster on the caliper? It's behind a nut that you remove n there's an Alan key that you can adjust.

Welcome aboard  Grin

Very reliable cars (being japanese) one of the most underrated cars on the road.
So not much to worry about.

You planning on doing anything "mod-wise" to it?

i got the oil rating from autodata at work, couldn't get the adjuster to take up enough slack but will find out in the morning when i get started on her.
Cheers Phil

Mod wise, at the moment not too sure how far I'm going to take it at the moment.
has had an after market air filter fitted. he he
Would like to lower it a touch but as I'll be towing a trailer on the odd occasion I can't go too mad on the hight at the mo, will also be looking at making up a decent stainless exhaust system at work. before all that i really want to make sure this cars as good as it can be in it's standard form before throwing too much money at it as last thing i'd want to do is make any existing problems worse
