This is my Baleno GTX (Australian market) It has the J18a and to be honest i have never thought of this model as something that could deliver so many shits and giggles . I also have a AE86 and an S13 Sil80 but the Baleno is fast becoming the favorite for street use .
Modifications so far are :
Intake pipe with home made (read cheap) cold air feed .
S13 CA18DET Ignition module and upgraded coil packs .
4 into 1 extractors and most of the exhaust system is 2 1/2" .
Haltech e6K engine management system .
After tuning this car made 112kw (150hp) @ the front wheels on the dyno .
I can only imagine that the ignition system has played a massive role in the power increase as this is a fresh but internally standard engine .
When driving this car on my own it is very fast , it is quiet capable of reducing many ego's to rubble .
Next round of modifications will include a lightened flywheel of about 4.7kg , earth kit , suspension upgrade and an LSD differential .
I am also looking into building a larger capacity engine full of lightened and balanced forged internals and a custom twin throttle set up . I have read many threads about the possibility of a 2.3L capacity without converting to the complete J23a and drive line .
Look forward to any advice on tuning that may be available world wide as in Oz most cars consist of basic mods or go down the turbo charged path .

Hi
I saw your article in clubaleno, under members rides, regarding the mods you have done to your 1.8 Baleno, and noticed that you are in Australia, which is great news as I'm a South Aussie.

I am very interested in buying an upgraded coil pack with the S13 CA18DET ignition Module, as well as the Haltech e6K engine Management system for my GTX Baleno. Could you please tell me where I can buy the above mention items, and from what model/brand car they are from, as the S13 CA18DET sounds like its out of a Nissan??

If you could please email me on andrew4444fun@yahoo.com.au
looking forward to hearing from you

regards
Andrew

Does cold air feed make that much of a difference? I've seen it done on an Indian forum with a Maruti Baleno, but is it worth the effort?

Would a plain K&N pod filter work in the same way to increase performance?

The intake would make a difference, not sure how much, but it would. If you look at the stock intake, it's shaped like a U, which is pretty inefficient. If you make it straighter (ie. easier for the air to flow) it will improve the performance to some degree.

This is where I'm not sure if a pod filter is better than if you just modify the stock piping to make it straighter and get a better flowing element.

Hope that helps out Smiley

Just removing the resonator piping makes a massive difference, even with the standard filter left in it just gives it a better flow. Colder air means more fuel, so gives it a better air fuel ratio if you have a more free flowing intake.
