Ok so not a help issue but more of a hint as to where to look. I've got a 1.8 glx estate and it was untill today suffering from a wet boot. Anyhow whilst fitting the new towbar (bosal £149) i had to remove the 2 metal supports from the left and right of the boot floor to put the support plates in and remove both the side panels from the boot, i think i've found the two issues that cause it.
Behind the panels you have a access to the rear quarters and wheel arches, in the bottom of both rear quarters are some ill fitting plastic breather boxs to allow the car to breath these were both wet and the gaps down the side of the car had water in them, so after lots of body seam sealant and tetra shultz  it's now all sealed in the places it should be but can still breath, and also i found on mine that there was also a leak from the petrol filler cap where the body wasn't sealed up round it inside so thats been done too.

Hopefully this will help someone out when trying to cure this issue in their own car

good little help this, as water leaks can be a pain in the ass to find. as you said you still let the car breath..... thats a good idea as the vents are there to allow the cabin pressure out when shutting doors and so on. i know of a few people that have filled and sealled the vents and blown there window out of there boot and had trouble with shutting doors also as a result
